Every day people are coming and going through the front doors of YWCA Northeast Indiana and as they pass the front desk everyone receives a greeting or word of encouragement that undoubtedly has them walking away with a smile on their face. It is Loretta and Barbara, the two Front Desk Receptionists, who make it their goal to brighten everyone’s days who pass them.
Loretta and Barbara both love to talk with clients, hear their stories and give a listening ear when it’s needed. When asked what her favorite part of her job is, Barbara said, “talking to clients and my co-workers and encouraging them.” Both women enjoy being there for people when they need it and take pride in helping lift clients up as they rebuild their lives. “It is a joy to be able to work in an environment like this, where you can feel good when you see women get back into the community and on their feet,” says Loretta. Being able to help women and families is what brought Loretta to work at YWCA. She knows that every client's story is unique and often times they are at their lowest low when they come to YWCA.
Loretta and Barbara believe YWCA’s mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all is very important. Every client that comes to YWCA is different; they each have their own stories and backgrounds. The mission means that they will take care of all who come in, no matter who they are or where they come from. “First and foremost, all races are equal and have the right to do what they want to do. Anyone should be given the opportunity to do that and we make sure they have the tools they need to do what they set their minds to,” says Barbara.
Often, Loretta and Barbara are the first people someone talks to when they contact the agency whether in person or over the phone. Keeping a smile on their own faces daily, helps them put smiles on the faces of others who may be going through a tough time. “We come from all walks of life, we all have different paths, we go through ups and downs but as long as you never lose hope the situation will begin to turn around,” says Barbara. Helping women turn their lives around is what pushes Loretta and Barbara to do their job on a daily basis, because everyone deserves a smile.
