YWCA's Response to COVID-19

How does a 66-bed domestic violence crisis shelter keep clients and staff safe during the COVID-19 pandemic? How about a domestic violence shelter that ALSO has two addiction recovery residences for women, offering an additional 30 beds? And, this same organization needs to keep a 24 hour, 365-day domestic violence and sexual assault crisis line operational while also helping those struggling with domestic violence outside of our shelter with the services they need.

Keep reading for a sneak peek behind the scenes at the YWCA Northeast Indiana.

Unprecedented times create unforeseen opportunities for us all to rise up and stand strong, which is exactly what YWCA staff and supporters have done.

In response to COVID-19, the YWCA’s rules and procedures were changed to keep consistent with the Department of Health’s recommendations. Social isolation has been difficult, but the YWCA agrees it is a necessary step for our community. We discontinued entry to visitors and volunteers.

We have been persistent in trying to find masks and cleaning supplies to keep our clients and staff safe.
We have been vigilant in making sure our facilities have been disinfected!

Our leadership team has been instrumental in guiding the shelter through the numerous changes.
Our staff has been doing daily wellness checks, checking temperatures, meeting needs, and continuing to offer services and push onward even when exhausted.

While restrictions prevent clients from attending church, services are streamed in on Sundays.

Many YWCA Northeast Indiana staff are also working remotely and doing everything they can to keep the organization running smoothly.

We are trying not to overlook celebrations through this COVID-19 crisis…

Did you know our shelter has, on average, 30 children onsite?
Goodies were delivered for the kids for Easter!
We also have had numerous Amazon deliveries.
And, a local hotel donated breakfast items!

We thank you for your ongoing support.  Your monetary and in-kind donations are making all the difference!
We also thank you for never wavering in your confidence in the YWCA.  We will continue to provide services to our community…even when a pandemic strikes.
